   7 There are already a number of excellent digital audio workstations. To
   8 mention just a few: ProTools, Nuendo, Samplitude, Digital Performer, Logic,
   9 Cubase (SX), Sonar, along with several less well known systems such as
  10 SADIE, SAWStudio and others.<br />
  11 Each of these programs has its strengths and weaknesses, although over the
  12 last few years most of them have converged on a very similar set of core
  13 features. However, each of them suffers from two problems when seen from the
  14 perspective of Ardour's development group:
  15 </p>
  16 <ul>
  17   <li>they do not run natively on Linux</li>
  18   <li>they are not available in source code form, making modifications,
  19   improvements, bugfixes by technically inclined users or their friends
  20   or consultants impossible.</li>
